Taking a photo? Quick tips

A better shot in three steps.

  1. Find soft daylight.Face a window and avoid direct sun or flash.
  2. Use a plain white or off-white sheet.Lay baby on their back and photograph from above.
  3. Keep the whole face visible. No supporting hands, toys, pacifiers or other people.
U.S. infant guidance allows partly or fully closed eyes, especially for newborns. The full face must remain visible.

A good photo. Three easy steps.

A U.S. baby passport photo starts with an original taken within 6 months. Check the 2×2 crop, review the 1–1⅜ inch head guide and confirm the face is clear. BabyPassportCheck offers paid checks and included downloads; paid downloads preserve the original face and background. The passport authority makes the final decision.

BabyPassportCheck photo packs are one-time purchases: one photo for $7.99, three for $15.99 or five for $21.99. Each original export includes the selected country’s supported photo size and a 4×6 sheet in PDF and JPEG. Choose a pack before checking. The same original’s downloads are included. Printing, shipping, application fees and official acceptance are separate from the download.

A few good
questions.

Upload an original and choose a photo pack before starting the check. U.S. printing uses a 2×2 inch photo with a 1–1⅜ inch head. BabyPassportCheck preserves the original, offers manual guides and explains infant exceptions. These answers cover the workflow; the U.S. Department of State determines the photo requirements.

What do I receive?

Choose United States, United Kingdom (paper application) or Australia before uploading. Get the selected photo size plus a 4×6 PDF and JPEG print sheet. Other countries and digital application routes are not supported yet.

Can my newborn’s eyes be closed?

U.S. infant guidance allows partly or fully closed eyes, especially for newborns. See the infant exception.

Is the photo officially approved?

Only the passport office decides. Checks are guidance; passport downloads preserve your original face and background. Read the U.S. requirements.

What does a baby passport photo checker do?

A baby passport photo checker is a preparation aid for an original photograph, not an approval service. For a U.S. printed application, start with a recent 2×2 inch photo and a head height of 1–1⅜ inches. BabyPassportCheck combines framing estimates with visual checks that a parent must confirm.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the photo should be taken within the past 6 months, show the full face and preserve the person’s appearance. A baby can change quickly, so an older file that no longer resembles your child is a poor starting point even if its dimensions are correct. Use the current U.S. requirements before choosing an image.

The following five checks explain what the tool can estimate and what still requires your eyes. There is no fixed 30-second promise: the first check may download a face-location model, and manual framing can take longer. A slow or missing detection does not by itself prove that a newborn photo fails.

1. Is the photo the right size?

The U.S. printed photo size is 2×2 inches, described officially as 51×51 mm. At 300 pixels per inch, a 2 inch edge contains 600 pixels. BabyPassportCheck prepares a 600×600 pixel crop, but the printed copy still needs a ruler check because a printer or shop can resize the file.

For example, a square JPEG can be printed at 1 inch, 2 inches or 3 inches without changing its pixel count. Select the intended physical size, use actual-size printing, and inspect the output. Our original-pixel minimum protects export detail; it is a product safeguard rather than a separate government acceptance rule.

2. Is the original background suitable?

A U.S. baby passport photo needs a plain white or off-white background. The 2×2 inch crop must exclude patterned bedding, toys and visible support. Background estimates can flag a concern, but they cannot certify a background or remove a shadow. Change the setup and take another original when needed.

According to the U.S. Department of State, digital alterations and artificial-intelligence changes should not be used for a passport photo. Smooth the sheet before capture, move away from direct sun and check both sides of the face. The checker keeps the existing background; it does not replace fabric with generated white pixels.

3. Is the full head the right proportion?

The U.S. head-height range is 1–1⅜ inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. On a 2 inch photo, that equals 50–68.75% of the image height. These are calculated proportions; automated facial landmarks still need manual alignment with the actual head and chin.

For example, a 600 pixel square has a calculated head-height range of 300–412.5 pixels before raster rounding. This helps explain the guide, not a new official pixel threshold. Hair volume, a sleeping infant’s position and incomplete face detection can affect the estimate. Move the guides to the visible anatomical points rather than trusting an initial overlay.

4. Is the face clear enough to print?

A sharp original is essential for a U.S. passport photo; a 600×600 pixel export cannot recover detail lost to motion. Inspect the nose, mouth and facial outline at full size before preparing the 2×2 print. A large file may still be blurred, heavily compressed or altered by a filter.

The U.S. Department of State requires a clear photograph without blur, grain or printer dots. Our sharpness signal is only an estimate and has no official pass threshold. Retake a blurred image in brighter, even light, hold the camera steady and choose the clearest frame. Avoid screenshots and messaging-app copies when the camera original is available.

5. Is the face positioned for the rule?

A U.S. passport photo should show the full face looking toward the camera, with no other person visible. Centering a 2×2 crop is a framing task, while infant eye and head-tilt exceptions are separate rules. BabyPassportCheck offers adjustable guides; it does not infer official acceptance from a centered face.

According to 8 FAM 402.1, infant head tilt is acceptable, and infant eyes may be partly or completely closed. Keep the face unobstructed even when applying those exceptions. A supporting hand or pacifier cannot be fixed by moving the crop if it still overlaps the face. Use the newborn guide to distinguish a permitted exception from a retake problem.

Should you visit a photo counter or take the photo at home?

Taking a baby passport photo at home can avoid a trip, but paid downloads and printing still have costs. USPS lists a $15 photo fee, while Walgreens lists a $16.99 capture package. BabyPassportCheck offers paid checks and included downloads, with downloads from $7.99. Compare the service included, not just the headline price.

Are baby passport photo dimensions the same worldwide?

Passport photo dimensions depend on the issuing country and the printed or digital application route. A U.S. 2×2 inch crop cannot be reused automatically for a U.K. 35×45 mm print or a Canadian 50×70 mm print. The comparison below links official instructions; this checker supports printed photos for the U.S., UK paper applications and Australia. Other countries and digital routes are not supported.

India’s row is specifically the Passport Seva guideline for children below 4, not every overseas consular route. New Zealand’s current page specifies a digital 3:4 image; a printed 35×45 mm requirement was not verified and is not asserted.

Canada requires a commercial photographer and does not accept home-printed passport photos. U.K. digital applications have their own instructions and crop process. Use the country source before buying a U.S. print pack. No country page or country-specific compliance service is implied by this reference table.

What should you do after the check?

A useful photo check ends with a decision: keep the original, adjust the crop or retake the photograph. For U.S. printing, inspect the 2×2 inch copy after using a 4×6 sheet at actual size. The U.S. Department of State requires photo-quality paper, and the acceptance facility makes the final decision.

For example, a correctly framed face with a visible supporting finger still calls for a new shot. A clear, unobstructed newborn with closed eyes may instead need the infant exception applied. Separate image problems from print problems: a 1.9 inch copy needs corrected output scaling, while motion blur needs a better original.

Follow the at-home shooting steps, compare labeled framing examples, then use the print-sheet guide. Check your child’s application instructions before cutting or attaching the photo. Keep a local original so you can prepare a replacement without reconstructing the image from a screenshot.
