Australian baby passport photo: prints, paper and signatures
Australian baby passport photos are 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with a 32–36 mm chin-to-crown measurement. Supply 2 recent colour prints using the specified dye-sublimation process and glossy paper. Children under 3 may have an open mouth; check the child application’s guarantor and parental-consent instructions before lodging the form.
Verified specifications, with a source for every row
Choose the printed or digital route before reading a measurement. These entries record what our October 23, 2026 review established, with an official source beside each field. “Not specified” means the reviewed source did not settle that point; it does not grant permission or establish a new restriction.

Australian details that a crop tool cannot replace
A dimension range is still a bounded requirement
Australia publishes a width range of 35–40 mm and a height range of 45–50 mm. The head measurement is a separate 32–36 mm from chin to crown. A square U.S. print does not become suitable simply because one edge lies near a stated number. Ask the provider to produce a portrait photograph within both dimensions, then check the head independently. Do not stretch the image to make the face taller or assume a permitted outer size excuses an oversized head.
The print technology matters
The Australian Passport Office specifies colour dye-sublimation printing on glossy photographic paper weighing at least 200 gsm. Inkjet output is not the documented process. That makes the print order more specific than selecting a glossy paper option in a home printer dialog. Ask the provider what printing process will be used rather than relying on a sample’s shiny appearance. The office recommends professional passport photography and advises against online passport photo services and mobile apps; this page should not conceal that warning to sell an incompatible download.
Guarantor certification and parental consent are different jobs
The child application page describes a guarantor signing section eleven and certifying one photograph in black pen. A parent’s consent signature is a separate act with its own witness requirements. The consent witness need not be an Australian citizen and may also be the guarantor if eligible for both roles. Domestic guarantor exclusions include family and household relationships that differ from Canada’s rules. Check each role separately, because a witness present for parental consent has not automatically supplied the child’s photo certification or satisfied the guarantor criteria.
Read the child instructions when online wording conflicts
Australia’s general guarantor page distinguishes paper-form guarantors from online-form referees who do not sign. The child application page still describes printing an online-completed form and obtaining section-eleven and photo signatures. We have preserved that mismatch as an unresolved research field rather than asserting a universal photo-signature waiver for online child forms. Follow the generated child checklist and seek official clarification if the documents disagree. For a baby under one, the child page describes a guarantor knowing the child since birth; it does not demand twelve months of existence.
What does an Australian child application actually submit?
The reviewed Australian child route requires two photos and a lodged application. Completing the form online does not make the process wholly digital: the child page says to print the form and attend a participating post office in Australia. Overseas applicants follow their nearest Australian mission’s process and the applicable guarantor rules.
Use the child application checklist as the working document. Confirm who must attend and who supplies each consent before booking a lodgement visit. The official child page specifically discusses attendance for children aged sixteen and seventeen; do not transfer those older-child instructions to a baby without reading the route.
Ask the photographic provider to deliver a matched pair less than six months old. Keep the copies flat and clean for any required certification. If the online-generated checklist differs from the general guidance, contact the Passport Office to settle that detail before submission rather than guessing which signature can be omitted.
Four problems to check before submission
These are rule-based retake scenarios, not a statistical ranking of rejection causes. Match a concern to the relevant requirement and inspect the original before changing anything. A crop can address framing when the source has enough space; it cannot repair blur, an obstructing hand, or an altered face.
The provider uses a home inkjet print
An Australian passport photo needs the documented dye-sublimation colour process and glossy photographic paper of at least 200 gsm. A sharp inkjet print does not establish that requirement. Ask the printer to confirm its process before ordering, and obtain a suitable new print rather than trying to fix paper or ink limitations with image editing.
An under-three mouth exception becomes a closed-eye assumption
Australia permits an open mouth for children under three. Our review did not establish a blanket fully closed-eye allowance. Keep the face clear and aim for visible open eyes in a calm frame. Do not add open eyes digitally or borrow the U.S. newborn exception to dismiss an Australian photo concern.
The photograph is square or has the wrong head scale
Check width, height and head measurement separately: 35–40 mm, 45–50 mm and 32–36 mm respectively. Measure the finished print rather than the on-screen preview. Return to the original for an appropriate portrait crop, or retake with more surrounding space if the full head cannot fit without distortion or invented background.
The consent witness is mistaken for the guarantor
Check the child application’s certification instructions and the independent witness conditions for parental consent. The same eligible person may perform both jobs, but the acts are separate. Arrange the required signatures in the instructed places. Do not assume a studio stamp, an online form or another country’s guarantor arrangement completes the Australian child requirements.
How should an Australian newborn session be arranged?
Arrange even lighting against the documented white or light grey background, without shadows or reflections obscuring the baby. Ask a professional provider about a newborn-safe setup and the required print process. For a child under three, a permitted open mouth is different from blur, a visible adult or an obstructed face.
Settle the baby between photographs and keep the supporting adult outside the composition. The photo guideline calls for the head not to tilt in any direction; we did not verify a general infant exemption. Medical difficulties have an official explanation route, which should not be replaced by an invented app exception. Keep the original appearance intact. Do not use an online service to generate missing face detail or substitute a new background after capture.
Questions before you submit
Are Australian baby photos exactly 35×45 mm?
The official guidance publishes a range: 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with a chin-to-crown measurement of 32–36 mm. Both outer dimensions and the head measurement matter. Ask the provider to preserve the portrait format and measure the physical prints. A U.S. square export does not implement those Australian dimensions.
Can I use an inkjet printer for an Australian passport photo?
The reviewed Australian guidance specifies colour dye-sublimation printing on glossy photographic paper of at least 200 gsm, rather than inkjet printing. Ask a provider to confirm the process and paper before ordering. Glossy appearance alone is insufficient evidence. BabyPassportCheck’s U.S. print-sheet workflow does not certify an Australian print or supply that printing service.
Can an Australian baby have their mouth open?
The Australian Passport Office allows an open mouth for children under three. That statement does not establish a fully closed-eye allowance or permission for another person to appear. Keep the baby’s face clear and follow the current photo guide for positioning. Retake an obstructed or blurred image instead of using edits to alter expression.
Does completing the child form online mean no prints are needed?
No. The reviewed child page says an online-completed form must be printed and lodged, with two photographs required. The general referee page and child signature instructions differ, so follow the generated checklist and ask the Passport Office if uncertain. Do not treat online form entry as a fully digital child photo submission route.
Who signs the Australian child photograph?
The child application page describes a guarantor certifying one photograph and signing section eleven in black pen. The parental-consent witness has a different role and eligibility test. Because general online-form wording differs, verify the checklist generated for your child before arranging signatures. We do not assert that all online child forms waive photo certification.
Official sources and review date
The official links below were reviewed on October 23, 2026. Requirements belong to the issuing authority and the chosen application route. Blank findings in our research are displayed explicitly, rather than filled with another country’s rules. Follow your application notice when it gives instructions specific to your child.
Which guidance should you read next?
BabyPassportCheck is a U.S. printed-photo preparation tool, with free checks and previews. The country guides below explain different official routes. Read the rejection guide when you have a notice, or use the at-home steps where capture is permitted. For example, Canadian commercial-photo requirements need a studio rather than the U.S. print-sheet workflow.
