Canadian baby passport photo: the studio checklist

Canadian baby passport photos require commercial in-person capture and professional printing: 2 identical 50×70 mm photographs, with the head measuring 31–36 mm from chin to crown. Check studio details and guarantor certification on one back. A home snapshot or home print is not a substitute for the Canadian child application’s photo requirements.

Verified specifications, with a source for every row

Choose the printed or digital route before reading a measurement. These entries record what our October 23, 2026 review established, with an official source beside each field. “Not specified” means the reviewed source did not settle that point; it does not grant permission or establish a new restriction.

Why Canadian preparation starts at the studio

Why does Canada require a commercial photographer?

A Canadian child passport photo is not simply a tall crop of an image taken at home. The Government of Canada requires capture in person by a commercial photographer or studio and professional photographic printing. Home printing is not accepted. A provider should know the 50×70 mm format and the 31–36 mm chin-to-crown range before photographing the child. An online crop service cannot retroactively make a parent’s home capture into a commercial in-person session, even if the file looks correctly proportioned on a screen.

What should you check on the back before leaving the studio?

One photograph needs the studio name, full address and date the photograph was taken on its reverse. The current child application form allows handwriting or a stamp, excludes a post-office-box address and does not accept adhesive labels for the studio information. Check the actual print, not an invoice in a separate envelope. A missing address is a delivery problem for the provider to correct. There is no reason to edit the baby’s face or background when the concern is information absent from the back.

Who must the Canadian guarantor have known for two years?

A Canadian child’s guarantor must have known the applying parent for at least two years and know of the child. A newborn is not expected to have a two-year personal history. The applying parent cannot also act as guarantor. Another parent may qualify if all eligibility requirements are met; family relationships alone are not a universal disqualification under the Canadian rules. Have the eligible guarantor certify the child’s likeness and sign the same photograph carrying the studio details. Consult the official rules before choosing that person.

What does Canadian newborn expression tolerance actually cover?

Canada allows some tolerance for a newborn’s facial expression, but our review did not find a blanket permission for fully closed eyes or a special infant head-tilt waiver. General framing still asks for the face and shoulders square to the camera. A white blanket over a car seat is described as a possible newborn setup, without visible hands or shadows, but the commercial capture requirement remains. For example, ask the studio whether it can accommodate a newborn safely rather than assuming the blanket example authorises an independent home session.

What should you collect and submit for a child application?

A Canadian child application needs two identical unaltered professional photographs taken within six months. According to the Government of Canada, child passports cannot be renewed. The parent or guardian applies again through the child route, with studio details and guarantor certification checked alongside the front of the photograph before submission.

First, arrange a commercial photography appointment and confirm the provider can supply the Canadian child format. Second, inspect both fronts under good light and measure the final paper dimensions if uncertain. Keep both prints clean and identical. Finally, arrange the required annotation and guarantor certification without covering or damaging the image.

Inside Canada, the available mail or in-person service depends on the application and timing needs. Families outside Canada and the United States should follow the relevant Canadian office’s child application and payment instructions. This guide does not calculate processing times or replace the current child application package.

Four problems to check before submission

These are rule-based retake scenarios, not a statistical ranking of rejection causes. Match a concern to the relevant requirement and inspect the original before changing anything. A crop can address framing when the source has enough space; it cannot repair blur, an obstructing hand, or an altered face.

The photo was captured or printed at home

For Canadian child passports, correct 50×70 mm sizing does not replace commercial in-person capture and professional printing. Book a suitable studio and explain that the subject is a baby. Bring the official requirements if needed. Do not pay for an online crop expecting it to turn a home snapshot into a qualifying commercial photograph.

Studio information is missing from the reverse

Check one print for the studio name, full address and date taken before leaving the photographer. The application form does not accept adhesive labels for those details. Ask the studio to complete the permitted handwritten or stamped information. Keep the surface intact; adding a separate receipt does not supply the required photo-back annotation.

The guarantor certification is absent or from the applicant

An eligible guarantor certifies the child’s likeness and signs the photograph carrying the studio information. The parent applying cannot fulfil both roles. Confirm the selected guarantor meets the current rules, including knowing the applying parent for two years, and arrange certification before submission. Do not invent a signature or replace certification with an app-generated label.

The baby’s face is blocked or poorly positioned

A car-seat setup still needs a clear face with no adult, hands or cast shadows visible. Discuss positioning with the commercial photographer and retake when support intrudes. Canada’s newborn expression tolerance does not establish a universal closed-eye waiver. Keep the head and shoulders facing the camera rather than relying on another country’s infant-tilt exception.

What should you tell a newborn photographer?

Tell the studio that the photograph is for a Canadian child passport, not a U.S. 2×2 print. Ask how the baby will be supported without visible hands or shadows. Confirm two identical 50×70 mm photographs, the 31–36 mm head range, professional photographic paper and complete studio information on one reverse.

The appointment should prioritise a safe, comfortable setup. An adult can settle the baby between frames while staying outside the photograph. Ask for a pause if the child is distressed. If the provider suggests replacing the background or removing a hand digitally, request a new original capture instead. Keep the final prints protected and arrange the guarantor’s certification using the current form, rather than letting a generic app insert text across the photograph.

Questions before you submit

Can I take a Canadian baby passport photo at home?

No. Canada requires the photograph to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio and printed professionally. Home printing is not accepted. The baby’s 50×70 mm format and 31–36 mm head measurement are only part of the requirement. Arrange a provider who can photograph a newborn and complete the back information.

What must be on the back of a Canadian child photo?

One photograph needs the studio name, full address and date taken, plus the eligible guarantor’s likeness certification and signature. The current child application form permits handwritten or stamped studio information, not adhesive labels. Check the official form for exact instructions and inspect the actual reverse before submitting the pair of photographs.

Must the guarantor have known my newborn for two years?

The two-year relationship concerns the applying parent, and the guarantor must know of the child. It does not require a newborn to be two years old. The applying parent cannot be the guarantor. Another parent may qualify when all criteria are met, so check the official eligibility rules before arranging a signature.

Can I upload a digital image instead of Canadian child prints?

The reviewed child route calls for two printed photographs. Digital-photo guidance on the general photo page concerns the online renewal route; child passports cannot be renewed and require a new application. Follow the child application instructions for your location. Do not infer a digital-only baby application from an adult renewal service.

Can an online checker guarantee acceptance in Canada?

No. An online check cannot establish compliance with commercial capture, professional printing, studio annotations, guarantor eligibility or the authority’s full image assessment. BabyPassportCheck’s current export is for U.S. prints and is unsuitable as a Canadian service. Use the official child checklist and have the photographer correct an identified delivery problem before submitting.

Official sources and review date

The official links below were reviewed on October 23, 2026. Requirements belong to the issuing authority and the chosen application route. Blank findings in our research are displayed explicitly, rather than filled with another country’s rules. Follow your application notice when it gives instructions specific to your child.

Which guidance should you read next?

BabyPassportCheck is a U.S. printed-photo preparation tool, with free checks and previews. The country guides below explain different official routes. Read the rejection guide when you have a notice, or use the at-home steps where capture is permitted. For example, Canadian commercial-photo requirements need a studio rather than the U.S. print-sheet workflow.
